The Woman and the Red Dragon

And there appeared a great sign in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another sign in heaven: and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, to devour her child as soon as it was born.

okay, so this one taste in a series of paintings depicting the biblical book of Revelation for my painting assessment. each painting is my own interpreptation with an artist model applied (in this case William blake, with his own red dragon piece)
i just tried to convey an essesnce of the passage, not flat out adaption down to the last jewel, crown, and diadem.
I had alot of fun (and frustration) trying to design an original dragon with 7 heads. i cant stand hydra-like depictions with beady little heads each attached to long weedy necks, it just looks like a demented plant to me. i aimed to design each head to unite to one powerful looking visage, as if each one accentuates a facial feature. the horns, uneven to the amount of heads, have also been arranged in one united aesthetic, so thats my stab at creature design! more on this dragon follows in other pictures to come.
I also focused on conveying the woman in a symbolic manner, notice the moonlight beneath her and the star-like light emanating from her hair and sun-like clothing.
